Nachos 1

Did you know nachos were invented by accident? In the 1940s, Ignacio “Nacho” Anaya, a maître d’ at a restaurant in Piedras Negras, Mexico, whipped up the first batch for a group of hungry military wives. He had limited ingredients—just some tortillas and cheese—so he cut the tortillas into triangles, added some shredded cheese, and popped them in the oven. The rest, as they say, is history. Imagine if he had a pantry full of ingredients; we might be eating something entirely different today!

Nachos are a beloved snack that combines crispy tortilla chips with a melty cheese topping and a variety of delicious toppings. Perfect for game day, movie night, or any casual gathering, nachos are both versatile and easy to prepare.

Ingredients

  • For the Chips and Cheese Base:
  • 1 bag 1 Tortilla chips

  • 1 cup 1 shredded cheddar cheese

  • 1 cup 1 milk

  • 2 tablespoon 2 butter

  • 2 tablespoon 2 all purpose flour

  • 1 teaspoon 1 salt, pepper, cumin (1 teaspoon each)

  • For the toppings (meat)
  • 1/2 1/2 kilo ground beef

  • 1 tablespoon 1 salt, pepper, cumin (1 tablespoon each)

  • 1/4 cup 1/4 meat sauce

  • 100 grams 100 cremini mushrooms

  • For the toppings (Salsa)
  • 2 pieces 2 tomato (large)

  • 1 piece 1 white onion (medium size)

  • 2 pieces 2 spring onion

  • 1 pinch 1 salt, pepper

  • For the toppings
  • 1/4 cup 1/4 jalapeños, sliced

  • 1/2 cup 1/2 diced tomatoes

  • 1/2 cup 1/2 diced red onions

  • 1/2 cup 1/2 guacamole

Directions

  • Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Prepare the Cheese Sauce: In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the flour and cook for about 1 minute. Slowly whisk in the milk and cook until the mixture thickens. Add the shredded cheddar cheese and seasonings (salt, pepper, cumin), stirring until the cheese is melted and the sauce is smooth.
  • Prepare the Baking Sheet: Line a large baking sheet with aluminum foil or parchment paper. Spread the tortilla chips evenly across the sheet.
  • Cook the Ground Beef: In a skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat. Add the salt, pepper, cumin, and meat sauce. Stir in the cremini mushrooms and cook until the beef is browned and the mushrooms are tender.
  • Prepare the Salsa: Dice the tomatoes and white onion. Slice the spring onions. Combine them in a bowl and season with salt and pepper.
  • Add the Meat Toppings: Spread the cooked beef mixture over the nachos. (I added some salsa)
  • Layer the Base: Evenly distribute the prepared cheese sauce over the tortilla chips.
  • Layering the tortilla chips and meat mixture: Repeat the same pattern.
  • Add Fresh Toppings: Top the nachos with the homemade salsa, jalapeños, diced tomatoes, red onions, and guacamole.
  • Bake the Nachos: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 10-15 minutes, or until everything is heated through and the cheese is bubbly.Nachos 1

Notes

  • Avoid piling all your ingredients on top in one heap. Instead, create multiple layers. Start with a base layer of chips, then add cheese, followed by a layer of toppings. Repeat this process for better distribution and flavor in every bite.
  • Spread your toppings evenly to ensure each chip gets a fair share of the goodness.
  • Nachos are best enjoyed fresh out of the oven when the cheese is still gooey and the toppings are warm.
